Pictured is Lois’ parents 25th wedding anniversary. Her parents are at the center of the photo with Lois seated below them on the floor dressed in black.
Her father, Clark Burnham, was a gynecologist and surgeon and her mother, Matilda Spelman, was a young woman of refinement who worked hard raising the children. Prior to that she did some work as a teacher. Lois’ parents were considered unusual when it came to Victorian era parenting in that they openly displayed affection for each other in front of their children. Lois grew up in a happy home and was exposed to cultural activities and service to others.
