Explore the Local Area
The following information is provided as a courtesy, but does not necessarily imply endorsement. Please check reviews and contact each entity directly restrictions and hours.
Many visitors enjoy exploring northern Westchester County and the Hudson Valley, just as Bill and Lois Wilson did even before they moved here in 1941. The area has many famous historic sites, ranging from the Rockefeller Estate (Kykuit) to the John Jay Homestead. See bottom for more links.
Exploring 12 Step points of interest is also popular. Nearest to Stepping Stones are the New York City sites, including the office of A.A. World Services (A.A.W.S.) (A.A. headquarters for North America). Several hours away are The Wilson House (Bill W.’s birthplace) in Vermont and Dr. Bob’s Home in Ohio. See the 12 Step Points of Interest section of this page for more.
Stepping Stones is conveniently accessible by commuter rail from Grand Central Terminal (also known as Grand Central Station) in Manhattan, NYC, NY, via Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem Line. Stepping Stones is also about 30 minutes from Westchester County Airport, and one to two hours from LaGuardia and Kennedy airports in Queens, NYC, NY, Stewart Airport in New Windsor, NY, and Newark Airport in Newark, NJ.
Local Museums, Parks & Arts Venues to Tour, Explore, & Hike
Lois had an eye for art, and both Bill and Lois had a love of classical music and nature. They were known to take long drives. (They would first debate who got to be the driver.) They also liked to hike and explore the Hudson Valley region. If you would like to do the same, download a list (link to PDF) with some of the popular nearby museums, parks, and arts centers. Most are 25 to 30 minutes by car from Stepping Stones. Please call or check each website for hours, admission, and programs.
Around the Town of Bedford, New York
Explore the three hamlets of Bill and Lois’ hometown – the Town of Bedford, which offers a list of local sites, places of worship, and more. Katonah, Bedford Hills, and Bedford Village each has a quaint hamlet center with restaurants, shops, and cultural events. Learn more about local options on the dining and lodging section of this page.
